You can leave a player on the 60 day DL indefinitely. That's sort of the point of the 60 day DL. It takes the player off of your 40 man roster and frees up the spot for a long-term replacement. The only drawback is that you can't take that player off the list before the 60 days are up. So using it as a way to sock away players who you don't want to burn a roster spot on but still want to keep is probably not a good idea.
So yeah, if you have a guy who is out for 6 months you don't need to reset their status on the DL after the 2 months are up. Once the 60 days have passed you can call the guy back up whenever you want. Obviously, it's a bad idea to call a guy who is going to be out for several months up to your 40 man roster but hey, whatever floats your boat.
