You certainly are learning the game. Regarding when to "hook" pitchers, playing out the games is always the foolproof way of avoiding disagreements with your AI "manager" in this regard but another way you can influence matters without micromanaging is to use the slider buttons in Team Strategy. You can find that in your Team Menu - take a look and you will see what I mean.
