Opening Night

Oct. 1, 2013

A classic puck drop for the NHL saw a lot of good competition among some popular teams. Starting the night off was two Original Six teams in the Leafs and the Canadiens. The two played a tight defensive game, in spite of the absence of one Carey Price, with no goal coming until enforcer George Parros kicked things off for Montreal. The second period ended with a goal apiece. The final two goals of the game came for Montreal as Toronto failed to capitalize on 3 PP chances in the third period, giving Devin Dubnyk his first win of the season. Toronto will continue their road trip tomorrow night in Philadelphia where they'll look to bounce back.

For those looking for a more fast paced game the Blackhawks played host to the Capitals in a 10 goal match. Ovechkin opened up the league score board just minutes into the first period, but Chicago caught up quick and then overtook the lead 2-1 on a Kris Versteeg shorthanded shot. Before the end of the first Ovi tied the game back up. The Caps started off the 2nd by taking the lead again, but after 3 goals by Sharp, Kane, and Hossa the Blackhawks were able to hold the lead. The teams traded three more goals to end the game 4-6 in favor of the Hawks, whose special teams played a perfect PK and PP on the night's 5 penalties.

The night ended in western Canada where the Jets flew into Edmonton to take away a 3-1 win. The Oilers young talent was unable to produce as they were without their top center RNH. The first week of league action will continue tomorrow night as the Red Wings take on the Sabres, and the Ducks head to Denver to take on the Avs.
