A’s Sneak Into Playoffs On Final Day After 3-2 Win, Astros Loss
October 3, 2016
They did it! The Oakland Athletics went 21-8 down the stretch and snuck into the playoffs ahead of the Houston Astros on the last day of the season. There was jubilation in the air when Liam Hendriks closed out a 3-2 win against the Seattle Mariners for his 18th save of the season and for good reason – the team knew they had survived another day and at least earned themselves a shot at a 1-game playoff with Houston. But that playoff would never come, as the Astros suffered a 4-2 loss at the hands of division rival Los Angeles Angels.
Oakland will now face familiar face Josh Reddick and the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS. Oakland went 4-2 against Cleveland during the regular season. Game 1 will see two of the AL’s best pitchers square off. Sonny Gray (19-9, 2.56 ERA, 245 K) who came 3 strikeouts away from the AL Pitcher’s Triple Crown will take the mound against Corey Kluber (17-9, 2.68 ERA, 229 K) who jockeyed with Gray all season for the ERA crown.
