Oakland Comes Back From 2-0 Deficit, Defeats Indians in 5
October 14, 2016
The Oakland Athletics completed their comeback last night, defeating the Cleveland Indians in a 2-1 nail biter. The A’s dropped their first two games of the ALDS in Cleveland, losing Game 1 by the score of 3-2 and Game 2 by the score of 5-2. With their backs against the wall, took the series back to Oakland and defeated the Indians by scores of 9-3 and 8-7. With the series tied at 2 a piece, the ALDS came down to a one game playoff.
Kendal Graveman took the mound for the Athletics while Carlos Carrasco took to the bump for the Indians. And this matchup was a pitchers duel from the start. Graveman started off shaky, allowing 4 singles and 1 run in the first inning. But he finished strong, allowing 4 hits and 0 runs for the remainder of the game. Carlos Carrasco pitched just as well, if not better. He allowed a sac fly in the third inning and an RBI groundout in the fifth inning and just 4 hits all game. But the A’s just got timely hits and productive outs, which let them eek out, a 1 run win.
Denard Span earned the series MVP award; he hit .364 with 1 HR, 2 RBI with 4 runs scored. Span added, “We’re lucky to be going to the League Championship Series. If all the series’ are like this, it will definitely be an exciting postseason.”
The A’s are set to face off against the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow. The A’s went 1-5 against Toronto this season. Sonny Gray (19-9, 2.56 ERA) will face off against Marcus Stroman (10-5, 4.08 ERA).
