The for reals actual reason for the stopper role in OOTP came about because in 1871-1975 or so, with starting pitchers finishing way more games than they do now closers hardly ever pitched. The conditions closers are used in now happened far less often. As the closer was the best bullpen arm using him for only 20 to 30 innings a year seemed a bit silly. Stoppers are closers with looser reigns, they come in earlier and pitch longer. Save conditions are ignored.
