You can do is to create minor league, and move the team there. Then you can go to the schedule editor, and clear the league's schedule (double check that you're clearing the schedule for the minor league). Repeat for 1873.
Then in 1874, move the team back to the Majors and delete the minor league. The team history will indicate that the franchise started in 1871, but no stats will have accrued in 1872 and 1873.
