The final division has been clinched. The Chicago White Sox have held off the Oakland Athletics and have won the AFC West.

Padres 3B Dave W Roberts has a torn posterior cruciate ligament. He will miss 9-10 months.

RP Ray Culp is expected to be leaving the Red Sox at the end of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Royals loaded the bases with one out. Piniella brought in a run with a single. Otis followed him with a bases-loaded walk. Mayberry walked as well to bring home run number 3 as the Royals battes around the order.

In the top of the sixth, Maddox scored on a 3-6-3 double play ball and then Burroughs hit a solo home run to make it a 1-run game.

After six: Kansas City 3 Texas 2.

Nelson ended the top of the eighth by striking out Burroughs to get his 125th K of the season.

Jim Panther took the mound in the bottom of the eighth for the Rangers. The Royals loaded the bases with one out. But they did not score.

Monty Montgomery took the mound for the Royals in the top of the ninth. All the Rangers could muster was a harmless two out walk.

Final score: Kansas City 3 Texas 2.
