Maddox singled in the top of the first to extend his hit streak to 11 games. Burroughs followed up with a 3-run homer. The Rangers got 5 hits in the innning.
In the top of the third, Mason got an RBI single to add to the Rangers lead.
Howard injured his elbow in the bottom of the third and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Larry Biittner.
After three: Texas 4 New York 0.
The lead grew bigger in the top of the fourth thanks to a 2-run homer by Nelson. It was his first home of the season. Maddox followed up with a single, the Rangers 10th hit of the game. Biittner tried to add an RBI single but Maddox was thrown out at home trying to score from second.
Blomberg put the Yankees on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. The Yankees loaded the bases with one out and then Broberg walked Clarke on four pitches to bring home a run.
Biittner did get his RBI single in the top of the sixth. With runners at first and second with two out, the Yankees pulled Peterson and brought Dick Pole in to pitch. Dent singled to load the bases and Mason came through with a 2-run single. An error loaded the bases again before Billings popped out to retire the side.
The Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth. Chalk got a base on balls to bring home a run.
After six: Texas 9 New York 3.
The Yankees got runners at second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh. Kevin Kobel replaced Broberg on the mound. Clarke hit a 2-run double.
Nelson brought a run home with a single in the top of the ninth.
The two teams combined for 27 hits.
Final score: Texas 10 New York 5.
