use what typically happens in your leageu..

do they mostly jsut rot until they sign a 1-2yr smaller contract closer to spring training? if so, you should also wait until their demand drops...

if ai teams are paying them, then you need to jump into the negotiation earlier, obviously.

mostly age and ability wil be the key.. demand can change in any given year, though. i've seen a not so great player have the largest contract in the league.. it happens all the time in real life (ryan howard is a good example of overpaid for 1 good season, lol.)

if this is the first couple years, it may be different later... in any case, some FA season are good and many are bad as far as depth. some settings could help out too, like other said.. i use 7yr max contracts. i'm sure i "see" more now, if tallied, but i can't feel a huge difference from 10yr max, tbh.
