In the top of the fifth, Callison broke the scoreless tie with a two run homer. The Yankees then loaded the bases with one out. Murcer popped into the infield fly rule for the second out. Blomberg then drew a walk to score Kenney. Munson added an RBI single. Spikes finally grounded to third to retire the side as ten men came to bat in the frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, Billings cut the deficit in half with a two run homer.
Goodson had a double in the top of the eighth for the Yankees 10th hit of the game. Roger then intentionally walked pinch hitter Jim Rice to load the bases with nobody out. Pinch hitter Don Mincher then hit a grand slam. BillCastro then replaced Rogers on the mound for the Rangers.
Medich finished off the bottom of the eighth by striking out Dent for his 20th K of the season.
