In addition, two number 1 seeds (1929 A's and 1939 Yankees) were easily defeated by number 8 seeds. Also, great players like DiMaggio, Gehrig and Wagner have been terrible. I hope things improve when I start the round of 16.

I've found the 1939 Yankees can either be flat as toilet water or downright unstoppable whenever I match them up in tournaments. I had a 64-team tournament last year, and the 1939 Yankees made the finals (losing to the 1927 Yanks in 5 games). I am running a new one this year — and they (the No. 2 seed in their bracket) got swept by the 1934 Detroit Tigers, a No. 15 seed.
I found that vintage teams do better if they play in (or closer to) their vintage year in default settings. You always get a choice in Historical Exhibition to play in the visiting team's year, the home team's, or under modern settings. Vintage teams don't always perform well in modern settings, with all the pitching changes and what-have-you.
