1965 NHL Offseason News and Notes
Here are the skating leaders for the regular season
Here are the goalie leaders for the regular season
Here are the playoff scoring leaders
Toronto's Bobby Hull has has 213 points in 452 games. Not quite the ppg pace he's shown in the playoffs! In the postseason, he now has 45 points in 44 games, and in the last 2 years, he's accumulated 31 points in 24 games! Playoff performer!
Dave Keon wins the first Conn Smythe Award for playoff MVP with 18 points in 14 games, though I doubt anyone would have argued with
Jack McCartan taking the award after being put into a 4-0 deficit of game 7, and not allowing a goal for 44 minutes!!
23 year old
Jacque Laperriere is now a Norris trophy winner. That is making his trade from the
Rangers for
Bill Gadsby look even worse now! Trades like this are why the
Habs are in the middle of a dynasty!
Ron Ellis is the third straight
Bruin to win the rookie of the year! They haven’t been able to win much during that time though. It’s either a sign the
Bruins are about to be back, or that rookies make almost no impact lately in the NHL!
Johnny Bower, Allan Stanley and
Red Kelly all have decided to retire!
Bower played 7 years in
NY, and is the
Rangers all time leader in shut outs, with 40. He spent the first half of his career in the
Detroit system, battling with
Marcel Pelletier for playing time.
Bower retires as a 4 star goalie. A blow to the
Rangers.
Stanley had a very productive career, and will be a member of the Hall of Fame. His final year, he was traded to
Toronto, and despite being injured for the rest of the regular season, recorded 6 points, and a 63 game rating in his 12 playoff games.
Red Kelly also finished his career in
Toronto, after what I think was an ill advised trade for young
Yvon Cournoyer.
Kelly had 61 points in 127 games as a
Leaf, but helped them win the 64 cup!
Kelly finished his career with 937 points, mostly with
Montreal, where the
Habs will retire his number!
A flurry of deals take place on the eve of the draft. 8 trades, which is probably the most ever, but nothing major happened, no picks were moved. So nothing to see here, lets get to the draft.
With the top pick, the
Blackhawks select another goalie….No, kidding…..They select
Franks younger brother,
Pete Mahovlich.
Chicago couldn’t select a goalie as no one was available. The NHL actually changed the entry draft age from 17 to 18 this year, and I guess as a result, only 12 players were available. Here is the whole draft. Pretty deep for the number of guys available.
Here is a look at
Pete Mahovlich.
