The Real LIfe 1970 MLB Pennant Chases:
On September 6th, 1970 the NL East was led by the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 74-64 record, 2 games ahead of the Cubs and 2.5 games ahead of the Mets. First year manager
Danny Murtaugh had the Pirates go 19-10 from September 1st on to win the East by 5 games over the Cubs and 6 games over the Mets. Pirates SP
Dock Ellis pitched a no hitter on June 12th, allegedly while on acid, everything seemed to go right for the Pirates. As well the Pirates drafted OF
Dave Parker in the 14th round of the draft. Murtaugh would go on to win the Associated Press NL Manager of the Year. Although the Cubs finished 2nd in 1970, they drafted SP
Rick Reuschel who went on to a pretty good career. The Mets could not duplicate the miracle of the 1969 World Series season, they finished a respectable 83-79 but a trade with up and coming
Amos Otis who was sent to the Royals for
Joe Foy may have been an pre-season omen.
In the beginning of September of September the NL West was not a close race, the Cincinnati Reds had a 11.5 game lead on the 2nd place Dodgers with the Dodgers losing SP
Bill Singer for the rest of the season. Manager Sparky
Anderson had just come off a 14-15 month of August for the Reds, the only losing month of the year for the Reds. The Reds would finish the season 14.5 games ahead of the Dodgers. The Reds got off to a 70-30 start in 1970, they cruised 32-30 the rest of the way. Johnny Bench would go on to win the NL MVP in 1970.
The AL East was not a close race either. On September 1st, the Baltimore Orioles had a 12 game lead on the Yankees. The Orioles were 86-47 to this point. The Orioles finished 22-7 the rest of the way to take the division and pennant by 15 games over the runner up Yankees. The Orioles were back in the playoffs and looking for redemption after the 1969 World Series loss to the Miracle Mets. Led by the bat of 1970 AL MVP
Boog Powell and his 35 HRs and
Brooks Robinson's 94 RBIs with the steady stream of
Cuellar,
McNally and
Palmer on the hill, the Orioles were not challenged by the Yankees.
Things were a little tighter in the AL West, the Twins had a 3 game lead on the Angels and 7 over the Athletics with a month left in the season. The Twins (22-10) pulled away from the Angels who faltered down the stretch (12-18) and held off the surge of the Athletics (19-11) in the final month for the pennant win. The Twins were lead offensively by 3B
Harmon Killebrew (.271 41 113) and RF
Tony Oliva (.325 23 107). The Twins would have been more of a threat offensively but lost
Rod Carew to a knee injury in the 1st half of the season. Pitchers
Jim Perry (24-12 3.04)
Jim Kaat (14-10 3.56) and rookie
Bert Blyleven (10-9 3.18) gave the Twins a good 1-2-3 punch.
