December 1970 MLB News and Major Transactions

The Pittsburgh Pirates traded SS Freddie Patek, SP Bruce Dal Canton and C Jerry May to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for SP Bob Johnson, 2B Jackie Hernandez and C Jim Campanis. The 26 year old Patek hit .259 with 2 HRs and 18 RBIs in 103 games for the Pirates in 1970. "The Flea" only stood 5'5 was a 22nd round pick of the Pirates in 1965. With current SS Gene Alley, the Pirates felt that Patek was expendable. The 29 year old Dal Canton was 3-7 with 5 saves, a 5.70 ERA in 41 games including 6 starts for the Pirates in 1970. Dal Canton was an All Star in 1969 and finished 2nd in the Reliever of the Year voting that season. He had 17 saves and a 2.50 ERA in 57 games for the Pirates in 1969. The 27 year old May hit .239 with 1 HR and 13 RBIs in 44 games for the Pirates in 1970. The Pirates added 27 year old Johnson who was 9-9 with a 2.81 ERA in 26 starts for the Royals. Johnson finished 3rd in the 1970 AL Rookie of the Year voting. He was ranked the 12th MLB prospect in April 1969. The 30 year old Hernandez hit .181 with 1 HR and 12 RBIs in 98 games for the Royals in 1970. The 26 year old Campanis hit .111 with 0 HRs and 3 RBIs in 8 games for the Royals in 1970.

The New York Yankees traded LF Bill Robinson to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for SP Barry Moore. The 27 year old Robinson did not play in the MLB since 1969 when he hit .198 with 3 HRs and 11 RBIs in 84 games for the Yankees. Robinson was a member of the 1969 World Series winning Yankees. Robinson was nicknamed "Weaser" and nobody including himself can determine why. Known for his unique pre-batting ritual which included a quick Lords Prayer, crossing himself, rubs his forehead from the eyebrows to the hairline with the middle and index finger of his right hand. In his debut in 1966 at age 23, Robinson pinch ran for Hank Aaron. Robinson's struggles in 1970 made him expendable in a trade as he spent the season in the minors. The 27 year old Moore was 7-11 with 1 save, a 5.22 ERA in 37 games including 18 starts for the Indians (11) and White Sox (7).

The Cleveland Indians have traded C Duke Sims to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for SP Alan Foster and RP Ray Lamb. The 29 year old Sims hit .316 with 21 HRs and 62 RBIs in 131 games for the Indians in 1970. Sims is a 2-time All Star (1969-1970). The 24 year old Foster was 15-9 with a 3.45 ERA in 33 starts for the Dodgers. Foster made his MLB debut on April 25th, 1967 for the Dodgers. Foster in real life gave up a HR to Pirates Willie Stargell that was hit completely hit out of Dodger stadium, some 507 feet. The 26 year old Lamb was 2-4 with 5 saves, a 4.78 ERA in 34 games for the Dodgers in 1970. Lamb was ranked the 64th MLB prospect in April 1969.

The Chicago White Sox have released Lee Stange. The 34 year old was 0-3 with a 6.83 ERA in 17 games for the White Sox (12) and Red Sox (4) in 1970. It appears that this could be the end for Stange. Stange made his MLB career debut on April 15th, 1961. Stange may still harbor some resentment to the Boston Red Soxs when Stange did not get a start in the 1967 World Series. Stange was also known for bowling, including a picture of him taken with a bowling ball on the pitchers mound. Stange once struck out 4 batters in an inning in 1964. With Stange struggling in 1970, the White Sox snapped up Stange on waivers and hinted if he didn't help out the White Sox, he would retire.

The California Angels have traded RP Greg Garrett to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for SP Jim Maloney. The 23 year old Garrett was 4-2 with 1 save, a 5.44 ERA in 19 games including 7 starts for the Angels. Garrett was ranked the MLB's 80th prospect in April 1970. The 30 year old Maloney was 1-3 with a 10.19 ERA in 7 games including 3 starts for the Reds. Maloney was an NL All Star in 1965. Maloney led the league with 19 wild pitches in 1963 but also led the league with 9.53 K/9 in the same season. In 1966 he led the league with 5 shut outs. Maloney was always a threat to pitch a no-no, he had in real life a 9 inning no hitter, 10 inning no hitter, lost a no hitter in the 11th and left 2 potential no hitters in the 7th with injuries. Maloney was originally scouted as a SS, but long time scout Bobby Mattick suggested Maloney go pro as a pitcher. In May of 1963, Maloney struck out 8 consecutive Braves. Chronic arm problems started to show up in Maloney's performance in 1970 as well another hold out with the Reds to start the season did not make him popular. To add to matters, he ruptured his Achilles tendon running out a ground ball and missed much of the season. With tensions between Maloney and Reds Manager Sparky Anderson, Maloney was traded.

The Philadelphia Phillies have traded SP Grant Jackson, C Jim Hutto and LF Sam Parrilla to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for RF Roger Freed. The 28 year old Jackson was 8-8 with 1 save, a 2.61 ERA in 28 games including 23 starts for the Phillies. Jackson was an All Star in 1970, he made his MLB debut on September 3rd, 1965 surrendering a 3-run HR to Reds Frank Robinson after striking out the 1st two batters he faced. Jackson was hoping to get selected by either of the four expansion franchises in 1968 as he was not getting regular starts with the Phillies, but after being a regular starter in 1969-70, he finally got his wish when the Phils moved him to Baltimore. The 23 year old Hutto hit .096 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs in 20 games for the Phillies. The 27 year old Parrilla hit .200 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in 2 games for the Phillies. The 24 year old Freed hit .261 with 0 HRs and 2 RBIs in 13 games for the Orioles in 1970. Freed was ranked the 67th MLB prospect in April 1970.

The Atlanta Braves have released SP Don Cardwell. The 35 year old was 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 15 games including 3 starts in 1970 for the Mets (3) and Braves (12). It looks like it could be the end of the line for Cardwell who led the league with 38 starts in 1961. Cardwell debuted with Philadelphia in the MLB on April 21st, 1957 where he pitched 3 innings at the Polo Grounds in an 8-5 Phillies win over the Giants. In 1960 with his 1st start as a Cub after a trade he NO HIT the Cardinals. It was the first no hitter by a pitcher in MLB history when a pitcher made his debut with a new team after a trade. During the Miracle Mets run in 1969 (real life) Cardwell and Jerry Koosman drove in the only runs in a pair of 1-0 wins against the Pirates giving the Mets two winning runs driven by pitchers in a doubleheader. It is rumoured that Cardwell will seek retirement and get into the auto industry.

The Chicago Cubs have released LF Tommy Davis. The 31 year old hit .293 with 9 HRs and 69 RBIs in 134 games for the Cubs (13), Athletics (61) and Astros (60) in 1970. Davis is a 2-time All Star. Davis led the league with 230 hits in 1962 as well with RBIs with 153. Davis is a 2-time batting champion hitting .346 in 1962 and .326 in 1963. Davis made his MLB debut on September 22nd, 1959, he struck out against the Cardinals in his only at bat in 1959. Davis appears bitter that he is being released despite having a pretty good season.

The Montreal Expos have traded 1B Dave McDonald to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for 2B Ron Hunt. The 27 year old McDonald last played in the MLB in 1969 when he hit .263 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in just 7 games for the Yankees. The 29 year old Hunt hit .275 with 2 HRs and 42 RBIs in 132 games for the Giants. Hunt was an All Star in 1964 and 1966. He led the league twice for being hit by a pitch, 1968 (25) and 1970 (17). Hunt was the runner up in the 1963 Rookie of the Year award to Pete Rose. Hunt's motto was "some people give their bodies to science, I give mine to baseball". Hunt would have his elbow extended over the plate and get hit often (in real life 50 times in 1971 for Montreal)
