08/08/1978 - Cubs Solve Pirates, 5-3

The Chicago Cubs trumped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-3, at Wrigley Field. Chicago first baseman Dave Kingman was named player of the game for his performance. He went 2 for 4 with a home run off LHP John Candelaria. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Mike Krukow was the winning pitcher. Over 6 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 9 hits, with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. The 5th-place Pirates have lost 5 consecutive games.

Rudy Meoli aided the Chicago cause with a run-scoring walk in the bottom of the first. For the game, the shortstop drew 2 walks.

"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Meoli told reporters after the game.
