08/14/1978 - Cubs Bump Off Braves, 9-6

The Chicago Cubs topped the Atlanta Braves, 9-6, in NL action at Wrigley Field. The player of the game was Chicago first baseman Dave Kingman, who homered against RHP Duane Theiss. The Cubs sit in last place in the NL East Division with a record of 52-65.

Greg Gross had a big run-scoring single for the Cubs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Chicago trailing 5-3 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a sinker from Duane Theiss and stroked the single to right. It was his 137th hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cubs ahead, 5-4.

Gross told a Chicago Gazette reporter that he was "pleased as punch" with the win.
