08/17/1978 - Cubs Stymie Cincinnati, Take 3-1 Win
Chicago got a strong outing from Rick Reuschel as the Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 3-1, at Wrigley Field. Reuschel picked up the win for Chicago, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 4-1. Bruce Sutter notched his 26th save in 27 chances.
The Cubs got a big at-bat from first baseman Dave Kingman. For the game, Kingman went 1 for 3 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he stroked a 3-run home run off RHP Mario Soto. His 35th home run of the season gave Chicago a 3-0 lead.
"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Chicago skipper.
