09/27/1978 - Kingman Slugs Cubs to 16-7 Win with 7 RBI
The Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 16-7, at Three Rivers Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of first baseman Dave Kingman, who captured player of the game honors. He hit 2 home runs. He scored 3 runs and drove in 7. The winner was Chicago reliever Dave Geisel, now 6-0. The loser was Bruce Kison. Ray Burris notched his 3rd save in 3 chances.
Kingman took RHP Bruce Kison deep and then hit another off RHP Bruce Kison.
The Cubs got a big at-bat from third baseman Steve R Ontiveros. For the game, Ontiveros was 1 for 4. In the top of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 148th hit of the season gave Chicago a 6-5 lead.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Ontiveros told the Chicago Gazette.
Chicago now owns a record of 75-84.
