05/31/1979 - Cubs Need Extra Frames to Get Past Pirates; Kong Clobbers 2 More

Dave Kingman added some punch to the Chicago offense, helping them outmuscle the Pittsburgh Pirates, 16-7. In the game, Kingman, who leads the NL in runs scored with 43, belted 2 home runs (both off LHP John Candelaria), while scoring 4 times and driving in 6. Bill Caudill picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Kent Tekulve was tagged with the loss. The Cubs' win now puts them at 23-25.

Steve Macko hit a 2-run double off Kent Tekulve in the top of the 14th, which put the Cubs in front, 9-7. In addition to the double, Macko had 1 single, while going 2 for 4.

Cubs manager wasn't all too pleased, despite the win, telling reporters that the performance highlighted some clear areas for improvement moving forward. He refused to be more specific, however. "I'm not gonna publicize our weaknesses," he said. "That stuff stays in the clubhouse."
