no wrong way to do it... depends on your personal wants / goals etc.
since you are unfamiliar with baseball, it won't matter where you start... you don't be familiar with the names and strategies.
do you want to learn the modern game? 1900? etc? i'd start with what you think you are going to enjoy the most in future. historical? fictional? any combination between the two?
i'd try to learn what you will do the most in that respect.
e.g. in 1900 you basically can ignore hr power, whereas in 2018 it is a significant factor in player results.
if you have no intention of playing historical leagues, then you probably don't want to waste much time on them outside of a side attraction for boredom.
