05/27/1983 - Victory Pushes Padres Record to 23-23
New York first baseman Dave Kingman had a good game, even if his team did not. The Mets dropped a 9-7 decision to San Diego at Jack Murphy Stadium. Kingman went 2-5 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 times and driving in 4. San Diego reliever Ed Whitson picked up the win, bumping his record to 3-2. Scott Holman was collared with the loss. San Diego has now won 3 in a row.
A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 1st and no one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when first baseman Steve Garvey, who is tied for 5th in the NL in runs scored with 32, hit a single. The Padres went on to win.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Garvey. "And not try to do too much."
