Rain began to fall in the top of the second.
The rain stopped in the top of the third. The Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Tejada couldn't find the handle on a Williams grounder and that allowed Posada to score from third. Martinez followed with an RBI single. O'Neill was the next batter as the rain returned. O'Neill beat out the 5-4-3 to allow Jeter to score.
In the bottom of the third, play was stopped for a 35 minute rain delay.

In the top of the fifth, Martinez delivered an RBI double. Brosius knocked in two with a two-out double.
In the bottom of the fifth, Henderson put the Athletics on the board with a two-out RBI single.
In the top of the sixth, with runners at second and third and nobody out, Dave Telgheder took the mound for the Athletics. Martinez picked up another RBI with an infield single. O'Neill brought Jeter home with a sacrifice fly.
After six: New York 8 Oakland 1.
In the top of the ninth, a run-scoring single by Knoblauch extended the Yankees lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, with a runner on first and two out, Ramiro Mendoza took the mound for the Yankees and struck out Blowers to end the game.
The Yankees got 12 hits in the win.
