In the top of the eighth, the Yankees loaded the bases with two out. Dave Telgheder took the mound for the Athletics and struck out Martinez to retire the side.
In the top of the ninth, Brosius picked up an RBI double. Posada brought Brosius home with a two-out single.
In the bottom of the ninth, with a runner on first and one out, Ramiro Mendoza took the mound for the Yankees and easily protected the huge lead.
The Yankees came away with 12 hits in the contest while Athletics hitters struck out a total of 10 times.
