The Pirates will host the Cincinnati Reds in a three-game series with today being the Pirates home opener of the season. The Pirates lead the season series between these two teams 3-1.

In the bottom of the first, Wagner hit a two-out triple. It was his 160th career triple, moving him to 16th on the all-time career triples list. However, he would be stranded at third.

In the top of the third, Mitchell put the Reds on the board with a two-out RBI triple. Following a walk, Lobert hit a two-run triple. Bescher then brought Lobert home with a single.

In the bottom of the third, Leach put the Pirates on the board with a two-out RBI single.

After three: Cincinnati 4 Pittsburgh 1.

In the top of the fourth, Downey delivered an RBI single. With a runner on first and nobody out, Gene Moore Sr took the mound for the Pirates when Willis left the game with a sprained ankle. The Reds went on to load the bases with two out. But Hoblitzell grounded back to the pitcher to retire the side.

In the top of the sixth, Downey scored from third when Ewing grounded to short. With runners at first and second and two out, Sam Leever took the mound for the Pirates and got the third out to retire the side.

In the bottom of the sixth, Miller hit an RBI double. Gibson brought a run in with a sacrifice fly. Miller scored from third on a throwing error by Lobert after fielding an Abstein grounder.

After six: Cincinnati 6 Pittsburgh 4.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Pirates loaded the bases with one out. A Storke single combined with a Bescher error brought two runs home to tie the game. A walk reloaded the bases with one out. Harry Gaspar took the mound for the Reds. Clarke brought the go-ahead run home with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the ninth, Chick Brandon took the mound for the Pirates trying to protect a one-run lead. With the tying run at first and two out, Egan grounded to short to end the game.

The two teams combined for 7 errors in the contest.

Final score: Pittsburgh 7 Cincinnati 6.
