In the bottom of the first, Williams put the Yankees on the board with an RBI double. Curtis added a two-out RBI single. Brosius followed with his own RBI single. Raines walked to load the bases with two out. Posada, the ninth batter of the inning, grounded to first for the third out.
In the top of the second, Cone struck out the side.
In the bottom of the second, Martinez picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Cone was perfect through three.

In the top of the fourth, Henderson drew a lead off walk for the Athletics first baserunner of the game. Mack then brought Henderson home with a double for the Athletics first hit of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Curtis stroked an RBI double.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Martinez drew a walk on a full count to force in a run. Aaron Small took the mound for the Athletics. O'Neill brought a run in with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the eighth, Blowers injured his leg after hitting a lead off double and had to leave the game. Dave Magadan took his place on the base path and went on to score from third when Hinch grounded to second. Cone ended the frame by striking out Henderson to set a new team record for a regular season game with 12 K.
The Yankees out-hit the Athletics 10-2 in the contest.
