In the top of the fifth, Palmeiro put the Angels in the lead with a two-out RBI single. One walk later, Nevin brought two home with a double. Nevin then scored on an Anderson single.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jeter put the Yankees on the board with an RBI single.

In the top of the seventh, Jason Grimsley took the mound for the Yankees. The Angels loaded the bases with nobody out. Graeme Lloyd took the mound for the Yankees. Pinch hitter Randy Velarde flew to right, Palmeiro tagged up but O'Neill threw him out at home. Palmeiro also injured his leg on the play and had to leave the game. With runners at second and third and two out, Ramiro Mendoza took the mound for the Yankees and struck out Fielder to retire the side.
In the top of the ninth, Fielder got a two-out RBI double.
In the bottom of the ninth, with the bases empty and nobody out, Shigetoshi Hasegawa took the mound for the Angels. With runners at first and second and two out, Troy Percival took the mound for the Angels and got Jeter to ground out to end the game.
The Angels got 13 hits while the Yankees committed three errors.
