The Yankees will conclude their first home stand of the season with a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers.

The Yankees signed free agent RP Doug Creek to a 1-year contract worth a total of $212,000.

In the top of the second, Gonzalez led off with a 347 foot homer.

In the bottom of the second, Brosius tied the game with an RBI double. Posada followed with his own run-scoring single to put the Yankees in the lead. Brosius then scored from third when Raines grounded to first. Moehler allowed more earned runs in that inning than he had in his previous 23 innings combined.

in the top of the third, the Tigers loaded the bases with two out. But Gonzalez flew to center to retire the side.

In the bottom of the third, an RBI double by Williams increased the Yankees lead. One out later, O'Neill brought Williams home with a double.

After three: New York 5 Detroit 1.

In the top of the fourth, Easley led off with a 371 foot homer.

In the bottom of the fourth, Williams got another RBI double. Martinez followed with a two-run single. With a runner on first and one out, Bryce Florie took the mound for the Tigers. Brosius got a two-out RBI single as the Yankees continued their onslaught. A walk loaded the bases with two out. Curtis then scored on a passed ball to make it a five-run inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, with bases empty and one out, Darrell May took the mound for the Tigers. Curtis welcomed him to Yankee Stadium with a 354 foot solo shot.

After six: New York 11 Detroit 2.

In the bottom of the seventh, this time with two out, Williams set an AL regular season record with his third RBI double of the game. Martinez followed with a single to score Williams. The Yankees continued to run up the score when Curtis hit an RBI single. A walk loaded the bases with two out before Posada flew to left to finally end the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Clark led off with a 327 foot homer. All three of the Tigers runs had been courtesy of lead off home runs.

In the bottom of the eighth, Tim Worrell took the mound for the Tigers.

In the top of the ninth, with a runner on third and two out, Ramiro Mendoza took the mound for the Yankees and got Randa to pop up to end the game.

The Yankees pounded out 16 hits to blow out the Tigers.

Final score: New York 14 Detroit 3.
