In the top of the fourth, Cruz delivered an RBI single. Bako knocked in two with a two-out double. None of the Tigers three runs were earned.

In the top of the seventh, the Tigers loaded the bases with one out. Graeme Lloyd took the mound for the Yankees. Higginson flew to right without bringing home a run for the second out. Clark, however, came through with a two-run single. A walk reloaded the bases with two out. Easley then scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Jeter scored when Curtis grounded into the 6-4 fielder's choice. With runners at the corners and two out, Tim Worrell took the mound for the Tigers and got Brosius to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth, Mariano Rivera took the mound for the Yankees. Clark added insult to injury with a two-out RBI double.

The Tigers pounded out 12 hits in the win, despite striking out 10 times as a team.
