In the top of the second, O'Neill injured his back while hitting a lead off double and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Darryl Strawberry. One out later, Brosius scored Strawberry with a double.

In the top of the third, the Yankees loaded the bases with two out. Fernandez then fumbled a Curtis grounder, allowing Jeter to score an unearned run. Hentgen then struck out Brosius to minimize the damage to just one run.

After three: New York 2 Toronto 0.

In the top of the fourth, Knoblauch doubled the Yankees lead with a 376 foot two-run homer.

In the top of the sixth, Kelvim Escobar took the mound for the Blue Jays. The Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Martinez worked the count full and then watched ball four miss low and that brought Knoblauch home with a run. But that's all the Yankees would get as Strawberry grounded into the 6-4-3 to retire the side.

After six: New York 5 Toronto 0.

In the bottom of the eighth, Hernandez struck out the side.

Hernandez set a Yankees team record with 13 strikeouts as he finished off the complete game shutout.
