The main thing I can think of is that something in the 3d is causing your system to panic, essentially. I believe in the file->settings there's some options - it might be worth it to drop some of the 3d settings. Especially I believe the option to force a frame rate - it could be that the game sees your system is very powerful so tries to run at a really high rate, but perhaps that's causing something to go too far too fast.
