March 30-April 2, 2028: vs Toronto (4)

Game 1: The Blue Jays came to town for Opening Day, and it was weird seeing them without Vlad Jr. Then again, it was weird seeing the Rays without Wander Franco. But his replacement Ricky Widmar had a successful MLB debut as he was involved in two key run-scoring rallies which helped the Rays to a 4-3 win. Widmar's first MLB hit was an RBI single in the 2nd that tied the game at 1, and he scored the go-ahead run in the 6th after singling when Yordan Alvarez made it 3-2 with a bases-loaded knock. Nate Clark tripled in Julio Cedillo in the 8th with a big insurance run, cashed in when Jasseel De La Cruz was shaky in the 9th allowing a run on 3 hits and catching a break when a Blue Jay was caught in a rundown. Current Cy Young holder Shane McClanahan got the opening day nod and was effective but not efficient, going 5 6 1 1 1 6 on 94 pitches and leaving at 1-1. Jack Filby coughed up a Justin Ellison homer to put Toronto in front in the 6th before Alvarez put the Rays back ahead and gave him the win. Evan Godwin and Daniel Espino were effective in the 7th and 8th before JDLC barely escaped with the save. Debutantes Gavin Lux and Bobby Witt Jr. were each 1-4.

Game 2: The bullpen let the Rays down today as a pair of Blue Jay homers in the 9th and 10th doomed the Rays to a 5-4 loss. Jose Alvarado got Daniel Espino out of a jam in the 8th with the game tied at 3, and after Bobby Witt Jr's sac fly to score Nate Clark in the 8th gave the Rays the lead, Alvarado stayed on for lefty-hitting Dominic Fletcher who blasted a homer just inside the LF foul pole to tie the game. And Hayden Johns coughed up Jorge Polanco's 2nd longball of the game in the 10th for the winning run. Wasted in the loss was a monster game from Clark, who homered twice (a solo shot in the 1st and a 2-run blast in the 5th) and doubled in the 8th. Mack Anglin got the start and was outstanding early but ran out of gas in the later innings, allowing the Jays to tie it at 3 and finishing 6.2 8 3 3 0 7.

Game 3: Another tough one-run loss for the Rays as offense was scarce as usual at the Trop in a 2-1 decision for Toronto. Christian Little started, and after giving up a first inning run settled into his usual strikeout groove. I left him in a little too long in the 7th and it backfired as Dominic Fletcher got us again with a 2-out RBI double, chasing Little and ending his day at 6.2 3 2 2 1 11. Jack Filby and Aaron Ashby kept the Jays off the board the rest of the way but the offense just couldn't get much going against Toronto's Brody Westbrooks. He didn't give up a hit until Yordan Alvarez singled with 2 out in the 4th and kept them off the board until Judson Fabian and Bobby Witt Jr both doubled to produce a run in the 7th. That would be all they'd get. Fabian and Spencer Torkelson singled with one out in the 9th, but Witt whiffed and Keibert Ruiz grounded out to end the game and drop the Rays to 1-2 as they only managed 5 hits for the game.

Game 4: Groundhog Day at the Trop as they lose yet another low-scoring, one-run game with today's result being 3-2 Blue Jays. Jack Leiter started and had a bit of a rough start, giving up runs in the 1st and 3rd, but settled in and whiffed quite a few Jays until Adanson Cruz took him deep in the 6th for what proved to be the winning run. He ended 6 6 3 3 1 8, which is often good enough to win with this team but not with the way they haven't been hitting this weekend. Evan Godwin had a scoreless inning in relief and Blake Money looked pretty good pitching the 8th and 9th with 3 Ks. But again the blame for the loss can be left at the door of the bats. Bobby Witt Jr isn't one of the problem bats though, as he was 2-4 today including an RBI double in the 2nd, and Isaac DeLeon, making his major league debut, doubled in a run in the 4th. But aside from those two and Spencer Torkelson, who had 2 singles and scored both the runs, the rest of the bats were slumbering. Julio Cedillo was 1-13 in the 4 games, Yordan Alvarez 2-15, and Gavin Lux 3-16. These are early days, of course, so right now their struggles are more annoying than concerning.

Team record: 1-3. Next up: 3 at home vs the White Sox, including Andy Aparicio's MLB debut tomorrow night.
