April 10-12, 2028: at Boston (3)

Game 1: For a change the Rays wore their hitting shoes, and got just enough pitching to beat Boston 8-4. It looked like they might be on their way to a laugher in the first couple of innings as they jumped all over one-time Ray Chris Paddack for a 4-0 lead. A Bobby Witt Jr sac fly and a 2-run triple from Jhon Diaz made it 3-0 in the 1st, and Julio Cedillo followed with a solo shot (#2) in the 2nd. But Shane McClanahan gave 2 runs back in the bottom of the frame, and then a homer to another ex-Ray, Abraham Toro in the 4th to cut it to 4-3. Gavin Lux, who had a 4-hit night, singled in a run to make it 5-3 in the 6th. Mac left with 2 out in the 6th going 5.2 6 3 3 2 8 in another up-and-down outing, and Aaron Ashby gave up a homer to Gabriel Arias (who always seems to kill us) to cut it to 5-4 in the 7th. But Daniel Espino got a couple of big outs to finish the 7th, Jose Alvarado had a 1-2-3 2K 8th and after it looked like the Rays would squander a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in the 9th, Ricky Widmar came through with a two-out bases-clearing double to make it 8-4, and JDLC finished it in the 9th. Mac got his first win of the year.

Game 2: This team seems constitutionally incapable of winning two games in a row as bad pitching and not enough hitting doomed them to a 7-3 defeat. Mack Anglin was far from his best tonight, and perhaps it was because he had a sore elbow which forced him to leave the game in the 3rd inning down 2-0. Hayden Johns came on in relief and gave up a hit to make it 3-0, and then Johns yielded his 4th HR in 9 2/3 innings of pitching this season in the 4th to make it 4-0. The Rays climbed back into the game in the 5th with a 2-run Keibert Ruiz double and made it 4-3 on a Judson Fabian RBI single in the 6th, but they couldn't get that 4th run across and the Red Sox finally put the game away with 3 runs off Evan Godwin in the 8th. Anglin's injury is relatively minor and will have him out 6 days but since he'll miss a turn he'll probably go in the IL and we'll bring up a reliever at first then someone to start in his place. Jhon Diaz continues to hit in Spencer Torkelson's stead, going 3-4 today with a double and a steal and is 7-14 on the season. Meanwhile Yordan Alvarez was 0-4 again today and is hitting a miserable 146/241/208 so far. The Blue Jays won again, 10 in a row, and are now 6 1/2 up on the Rays as this up is down, black is white season continues.

Game 3: The Rays did something tonight they haven't done all season: win a series, thanks to an 11-5 win over Boston that really wasn't even that close. They had built an 11-0 lead and I pushed Jack Filby to try to give some of the other relievers a rest after the last few days. Filby ran out of gas in the 8th and put two on to start the 9th, and then Jasseel De La Cruz came in despite it being 11-1 and pitched like a typical closer in a non-save situation - poorly - allowing Filby's runners to score along with 2 of his own. But that was more stat-keeping than anything else as the Rays jumped on Alex Santos right from the get-go. Gavin Lux walked to lead off the game and Nate Clark drilled HR #3 over the Monster, followed by Yordan Alvarez putting #2 around the Pesky Pole at the other side of the stadium. Ricky Widmar tripled to lead off the 2nd and scored on a Julio Cedillo double, and then Widmar hit his first MLB HR over the Monster in the 4th. Widmar singled later, missing a double for the cycle. Clark had an RBI double and banged out 4 hits on the night as well. But it all wasn't wine and roses as Spencer Torkelson suffered a serious injury for the second straight season. Just after coming back from his hip issue, Tork suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon and will be out until late August/early September. Last year he went down for the regular season in early May with a torn meniscus and didn't come back until the ALCS. Despite this series of injuries his proneness is rated as "normal" so I'm chalking it up to bad luck, which hasn't been in short supply so far this season. Christian Little by the way got the start, and was his usual dominant self, going 5.1 3 0 0 3 11 but with all the walks and Ks threw 109 pitches just to get that far before Filby came on. Little did notch his first win of the year for his efforts. With Tork going on the shelf, our OF glut doesn't look so "glutty" any longer. Tork was also our backup 1B, and right now nobody else on the roster plays the position. With Cedillo, Fabian, Diaz and Clark we still have 4 OFs and Widmar can play some CF as well so I may bring up either Chris Sharp or Joe Barker to DH and play backup 1B instead of another OF like Luis Berdin.

Team record: 5-8. Next up: An off-day, followed by a weekend in Detroit.
