May 28-29, 2029: vs Columbus (2)

Game 1: It was billed as a matchup of the two top teams in baseball on this Memorial Day, but it turned out a one-sided affair as the Rays squelched the Lightning 9-0 behind big bats and another power outing from Mack Anglin. The veteran righty has really become a strikeout artist this year, and his 6 2 0 0 3 11 outing marked his third start in his last five with double-digit whiffs. He improves to 7-2 and finally gets his ERA below 5 at 4.68. Jordan Diaz (1 inning) and Mike Mooney (2) completed the team shutout. Meanwhile the bats teed off against Tristan Smith, who came in with a 3.53 ERA and left with one much higher after they had 7 off him in the first 4 innings. Jasson Dominguez kicked off the scoring with HR #11 in the 2nd, and then a 4-run 3rd broke it open thanks to an RBI triple from Ricky Widmar in his first action of the season, a Judson Fabian RBI single and a 2-run double from Spencer Torkelson. Fabian followed with a 2-run HR (#11) in the 4th and Connor Kirkley capped things off in the 6th his own 2-run blast (#5). Baltimore keeps winning so the lead stays 7 1/2.

Game 2: Alec Sachais turned in one of his most dominant performances and the bats came through again in an 8-3 win over Columbus to sweep the 2-game mini-series at home. Sachais had a ridiculous 6 2 0 0 0 13 line before running out of gas in the 7th, giving up a leadoff HR to Victor Mesa Jr and then two batters later Andrew Benintendi launched a 2-run homer to make it 6-3 Rays. Daniel Espino came on and despite hitting a couple of batters, whiffed two and got through the 7th. Jose Alvarado put 2 on himself and struck out the side, and Jack Leiter had a perfect 9th with a K to make a total of 19 Lightning struck out by Rays pitching tonight. They broke the game open early with 3 in the 2nd on an Isaac DeLeon double and Connor Kirkley's inside-the-park HR (#6), and 3 more in the 3rd thanks to Joe Barker's 2-run single and Jasson Dominguez's 12th HR of the year. The longball for Dominguez marked the 4th straight game he's homered in. Judson Fabian and Jhon Diaz later added RBI singles. Baltimore lost so the lead is a season-high 8 1/2.

Team record: 36-14. Next up: 2 more against these Lightning on their turf in Columbus.
