The Pilots (91-71) finished with just a one-game advantage over second-place Cleveland.
The Juke Box Heroes fell 6-1 in their finale, dropping them out of a first-place tie for the division lead.
The playoff berth is Dayton's first since 2018, the inaugural season for the Midwest Baseball League.
The Pilots will open the American League championship series on the road against Grand Rapids.
The Traders won the AL West Division with a 96-66 record.
