July 1961 Recap

North Division
Boston slipped back perilously to the pack with a 14-15 month and this is now a definite three-way go between them, the Colonials (2 GB) and the Stallions (3½ GB). It is the latter of these who looks like they have the momentum, roaring back into contention with an 18-11 sectional, with the two Robinsons – Frank and Cano – on a serious roll. No chance now for the Gothams, 12 games adrift and looking toward ’62.

West Division
Portland, too, has continued moonwalking into a tighter division race than has looked likely to this point. They are now just 3 ½ games to the good of Las Vegas, with LA still an outside chance back again by the same distance from the Lizards. If the Stags’ pitching doesn’t hold up then I fancy the chances of the Vegas unit here. The Rainiers would be eager to put this season behind them. It has been disastrous from the off and they look likely to lose 100.

South Division
Florida’s fall from grace continued in July and this division seems done and won, with Atlanta now a full 9 games clear of KC. The Firebirds squad just looks too even and deep to give up that sort of advantage. The Pirates’ 16-13 month has given them some hope of avoiding the cellar.

East Division
Still the tightest, most inept race of the lot, with all four teams still in it despite not one of them being above 500. Just 1 ½ games separate Carolina at the top from Virginia in third, and the Arrows are just 5 back. The way this division has gone so far it’ll be a matter of who loses less rather than wins more that will decide this one.
