New Jersey 3 v New York 2

An anticlimactic end to a thrilling opening game in this series as a Joe Kelley error in the bottom 9th results in a walkoff win for the Stallions. Gooden and Lolich both go 7 and leave with the game still tied, with the latter allowing just 4 hits and fanning 10. This bridges the Stallions’ deficit to one game.

WP: Gerrit Cole (11-8)
LP: Doc White (17-13)
  • NJER: Mickey Lolich 7 IP / 4 H / 2 ER / 10 K. Gary Sheffield 2-3 / RBI. Cristobal Torriente 2-3. Robinson Cano 2-4.
  • NYOR: Dwight Gooden 7 IP / 9 H / 2 ER / 7 K.

Las Vegas 8 v Los Angeles 0

This win, coupled with the Stags’ loss, clinches the West Division for the Lizards. All credit to Don Sutton, who steps up big-time with a 9-strikeout 4-hitter. Dickey and Brouthers lead the Vegas bats.

WP: Don Sutton (15-16) 9 IP / 4 H / 0 ER / 9 K.
LP: Joe Williams (10-17)
  • LASV: Bill Dickey 2-5 / 3-run 3B. Dan Brouthers 4-5 / 2-run HR [12]. Barry Bonds solo HR [44]. Martin Dihigo 3-5. Jesse Burkett 2-3.
  • LOSA: Ken Griffey jr 2-4 / 2B.

Seattle 1 @ Portland 0

Another season coming so close only to be denied right at the end for the Stags, as Rick Reuschel breaks their hearts with a 2-hit gem and Joe Gordon’s 5th-inning solo shot holds up. Fernando Valenzuela does everything asked of him and then some, allowing just 3 hits and whiffing a franchise-high 15 over the full 9, but the Portland bats let them down at the worst conceivable moment.

WP: Rick Reuschel (14-13) 9 IP / 2 H / 0 ER / 6 K.
LP: Fernando Valenzuela (15-13) 9 IP / 3 H / 1 ER / 15 K.
  • SEAT: Joe Gordon 2-3 / solo HR [20].

Carolina 6 v Indianapolis 1

The Dominican Dandy delivers as required, keeping the Arrows bats quiet in a strong CG win to get the Triplets’ noses in front. The home side takes the lead early and seals the deal with a 4-run 6th.

WP: Juan Marichal (17-13) 9 IP / 4 H / 1 ER / 6 K.
LP: Bob Shawkey (11-16)
  • CARO: Juan Soto 3-5 / RBI. Joe Cronin 3-4 / 2 3B. Jackie Robinson 2-5 / RBI.

Kansas City 7 v New Orleans 0

The Blues waste no time clinching the South Division with a dominant win behind Bret Saberhagen. Cody Bellinger whacks his 41st homer and drives in 3 for the victors, who will give this a good shake.

WP: Bret Saberhagen (19-9) 8.1 IP / 7 H / 0 ER / 8 K.
LP: Cy Young (14-8)
  • KANC: Cody Bellinger 2-4 / HR [41] / 3 RBI. Miguel Cabrera 3-4 / 2B / RBI.
  • NORL: Shoeless Joe Jackson 2-4 / 3B. Ken Boyer 2-4 / 2B.

Florida 2 v Atlanta 1

It matters not in the end with the Blues winning, but Atlanta’s title run comes to a disappointing end at the hands of Charles Bender and the Firebirds.

WP: Charles Bender (15-12) 8 IP / 6 H / 1 ER / 5 K.
LP: Lefty Grove (15-10)
SV: Fergie Jenkins (1)
  • ATLA: Robin Yount 2-2 / RBI. Jose Cruz 2 2B.
