Melvin Chavez limited St. Louis to one run over the first 5.1 innings, and the Rockford bullpen blanked the River Walkers the rest of the way as the Lighting claimed Game 1 of a doubleheader 4-1 at RFK Stadium (2005).
Chavez (4-1) allowed one run on three hits in the 5.1 innings. He was on the mound. He struck out six and walked three.
The lone Walkers run came in the top of the sixth when Manuel Coke led off with a single off Chavez.
Coke scored when Zach Wenman singled off reliever Sam Gibb with two outs.
Gibb left after getting one out in the sixth.
Steve Nilsen finished the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh.
Danny Wright handled the eighth.
Matt Whitmore worked a scoreless ninth for his 12th save.
The Lightning went up 1-0 when Javy Monjaraz homered off St. Louis starter Ming Xiang with two outs in the second.
David Blanton drew a lead-off walk from Xiang in the fourth and scored on an Ernesto Ferreras triple.
Back-to-back homers from Shea Langeliers and Joel Petrucci off Maximilano Minelli to open the seventh capped the scoring for Rockford.
