Don't put them on the IL manually. The game will do it on its own on the first day of the preseason (Feb 14-ish). Ignore the fact they (or anyone else) are still in your lineup from Jan 1 of 1943 to Feb 14 1943. Here is a picture of how it looks when you let the game make the requisite transaction and this will happen to all the WWII vets.

EDIT: I had the bench coach on and he moved them, trying it with me controlling all the levers...
