Calgary Recap March/April 2024

W 7-3 @ PIT (Mar 2)
Adam Boqvist comes into the lineup and immediately makes his presence known, getting his first Flames goal and assist both in the first period. With 40 shots of their own, and 2/4 on powerplay attempts, Calgary is the team overpowering their opposition for a change.

W 6-4 vs SEA (Mar 4)
Another three point game for Kadri as he proves how valuable he is to this team. Adam Ruzicka and Jakob Pelletier both struggle defensively, but a strong Markstrom performance is more than enough to keep the winning going.

L 5-1 @ TBL (Mar 7)
Despite the opening goal from Moser, the Flames respond with 5 unanswered goals, as usual stars such as Huberdeau and Kadri almost go missing. Horcoff proves his side are real contenders as he moves his winning streak to 5.

W 5-2 @ FLA (Mar 9)
After a rough start to their trip to the US Southeast, Calgary bounce back with another win. Chris Tanev gets himself a suprising multi-point game, including his first goal of the season. Hanifin also scores on the powerplay, something that the Flames were hoping to see more of in the dying games of the season.

L 11-0 @ CAR (Mar 10)
The conclusion to this road trip ends in a horrific game for Calgary. The team was completely outplayed in every sense of the word, allowing 42 shots, creating 18 and looking like an absolute disaster.

W 3-1 vs COL (Mar 12)
Calgary bounce back again, creating 45 shots and scoring 3 goals. The Avalanche stumble again, as their remote playoff chance begins to fade. With 12 takeaways, Calgary did an exellent job of punishing Colorado for their mistakes.

Breaking News
After being involved in yet another off-ice incident, Nazem Kadri's effect on team morale is being seriously considered. While a big contract to move, Calgary may look to cut ties in the offseason if they can get something in response.

W 4-1 vs VGK (Mar 14)
Calgary put aside their internal fighting to get a suprising win against Presidents Trophy hopeful Vegas. With Blake Coleman being involved in a goal and two assists, he took the first star of the night, but it was an excellent all around team effort.

L 3-2 vs MON (Mar 16)
Sam Montembeault was too good for the Flames, making 38 saves on 40 shots. With Markstrom unable to match his performance against 26 shots, Montreal left Alberta with full points.

Breaking
Looking likely to miss the playoffs, Dallas has made the decision to bring an end to Peter DeBoer's time as head coach. Assistant coach Alain Nasreddine will take over for the rest of this season and next year. Nasreddine has previously had a short stint as interim head coach for the Devils, but this is his first permenant appointment.

L 4-0 vs WAS (Mar 18)
Another case of goalies being too tough for the Flames. Kuemper saves all 30 shots he faces, as the rebuilding Capitals manage to pick up a win on the road. The blue line made plenty of hits, but without offensive chances it came to nothing. Sharangovich is breifly out with a hand contousion.

Transaction
Sharangovich to IR
Poirier to NHL

L 5-2 @ VAN (Mar 23)
After getting a win against a major rival, Vancouver further cement their spot as a playoff team. Petterson and Boeser star as always, with Dakota Joshua also having a memorable performance.

SOL 5-4 vs BUF (Mar 24)
Back to back games and back to back losses, Calgary fail to hold a 3-0 lead and has to settle for a single point. Poirier makes his NHL debut, picks up a single point and generally impresses.

Breaking
After large backlash over the Bowman hiring, and reported clashes with ownership, the Leafs announce he will not be continuing as GM. President Brendan Shanahan has made the decision to act as General Manager himself for the forseaable future.

W 4-2 @ CHI (Mar 26)
Helping his team to an early lead, Trey Fix-Wolansky further proves Columbus' mistake in waiving him, setting up two goals against the Blackhawks. Picking up his 33rd point tonight, MacKenzie Weegar remains an outside chance to break his best season, being only 11 points off it.

L 6-3 @ STL (Mar 28)
Another rough 3rd period for Calgary as the Blues turn a 2-2 game into a 6-3 final score. While a loss to a genuine contender is not suprising, many haped it would be a lot closer than this.

W 7-6 vs LAK (Mar 30)
Another strong night for Weegar, picking up 3 points, and needing 8 points from the last 10 games to get a season best. Kadri gave the puck away on a number of occasions, errors that those who want him gone are pointing to.

W 6-4 vs ANA (Apr 2)
A win against the ducks gets the final month of the season underway. Mangiapane shows off with another multi point night, as the two teams with little left to play for go head to head.

Breaking
After struggling this season, Spencer Carbery of the Capitals is the next head coach onto the coaching carousel. Bylsma, who took the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2009, and has been coaching the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the AHL, will be hoping to do the same in Washingotn.

L 3-1 @ WPG (Apr 4)
Another loss at the backend of the season. Winnipeg moves to 90 points and should be fairly confident of a playoff berth this season. Nazem Kadri scores the only goal, briefly quieting those calling for Calgary to seperate with him.

W 6-3 vs EDM (Apr 6)
While not in the playoffs themselves, Flames fans get the joy of putting a major dent in the Oilers' president trophy's chances. Another Kadri goal is scored as he tries to prove why Calgary need him.

L 5-3 @ SJS (Apr 9)
The Sharks prove too much as the Flames have a final road trip to LA. Markstrom struggles again against 40 shots.

L 4-0 @ LAK (Apr 11)
The first game of a doubleheader and the Flames are shutout, as LA continues their president's trophy bid.

L 5-2 @ ANA (Apr 12)
The Flames lose their final game in the US, though Boqvist and Weegar both pick up assists.

W 2-1 vs ARI (Apr 14)
While there isn't much fun in the dying games of a losing season, the Flames do get the fun of being the straw that broke the camels back, as after this game Arizona makes a major announcement.

Breaking
After being one of the worst teams in the league all year, Arizona coach Andre Tourigny finally gets the boot. He will be replaced by first time coach Brooks Orpik.

Additionally the Colorado Avalance announce they will part ways with Jared Bednay, Chris Lamoriello will take over behind the bench for the next few years.

L 4-2 @ VAN (Apr 16)
Markstrom struggles against his former team, as the Flames lose their final road game. Elias Petterson scores twice, including the game winning goal.

W 11-0 vs SJS (Apr 18)
A rough season finishes on a high note, as the Flames absolutely blow away the Sharks.

(I won't do stats now as I'll do a season recap after the cup final)
