Can someone please explain the stars?

Can someone please explain the value of the stars assigned to each player, I getting very confused as all season long I'm getting trade offers asking for one of my top rated players (4 or 5 stars) in exchange for a 1 star player!

Here's the latest offer I got today...

The Diamondbacks are putting forward RF Max Brown (1 star) for my SS Trevor Story (4 stars).

It seems a no brainer to me why would I accept this trade offer?

Thanks in advance.

Note in particular:

"Bob Wilson is a shortstop with 4-star OVR rating. This means that, by evaluating the player according to his underlying actual ratings, he is an above-average shortstop, compared to the rest of the shortstops in the league. It's important to note that this is specific to shortstops! If you have a strong crop of second basemen, if you were to change him to be a second baseman, he might be no better than 3 stars, or even less."

Thus depending on position, team need, depth, financial situation etc. there may be a reason you would swap a 4 star for a 1 star. But to me this just sounds like a bad trade.

Obviously managers from opposing teams are going to attempt to swindle you every so often--not every trade you're going to be offered is going to be 'fair'.

Think of it as a starting spot for negotiations. You might not want to trade Trevor Story, but maybe you want Max Brown (or some other Diamondback) and this gets your foot in the door. Put in a counter-offer, see what happens.

I've been playing this game since 2008 and I just made a trade that started out as a straight lefty-for-lefty swap and ballooned to a six-player trade. That's not unusual. What is unusual is that for the first time in my years, both the other GM and my assistant GM reacted with "There's a lot to like about this trade!" Sounds like a win-win, so I pulled the trigger.
