Player Retires in Middle of Postseason

I am playing in the playoffs against the White Sox and after game 2 of the ALDS I get a message stating that the 3B of the White Sox is retiring to donate his kidney. I thought "well that's nice he has some offseason plans". Nope, he retires right then, in the middle of the ALDS tied 1-1 after going 6-8 in the first two games. I have kept storylines on because I think they add a little extra to the game but every time something like this happens I get that itch to turn them off. Just something quirky I wanted to share.

It gets even better. Just won the ALDS and my owner died the very next day! I guess the shock of this team actually succeeding after five straight division championships ending with losses in the first round was too much to handle. Is it possible for you to die in the game? If we make it to the world series I half expect to receive a message saying as much from my shock.

He should have taken a medical leave. No reason he couldn't play again next year!

Why? It's not like this is something out of the realm of possibilities

Yeah, when somebody needs a kidney, you can't just say "can't you hold off until the post-season is over?"

Actually you probably can. Most people sit on a transplant list for 3-5 years, so if there was a family match, which would imply a recent diagnosis, waiting till the postseason ends wouldn't really be that odd. Plus it probably wouldn't be a career ender regardless.

That said I can see why this is in, as the less savory sudden ends to a career wouldn't be something Markus would put in. Really only sports management game I know of that deals with stuff like that is Total Extreme Wrestling, and that's because law problems, accidental/overdose deaths, and drug addictions are an unfortunate, but massive, part of the pro wrestling world, and how a promotion runner deals with them is actually really impactful to the buisness.

All the people saying that it wouldn't be a career ended fail to mention that, when this happens in real life, the athlete involved in the transplant does retire. Once in the NFL and once in the NBA (Sean Elliott was the recipient, not the donor, and he tried to make a comeback, but it only lasted for 19 games and he had to retire anyway).

Besides, I doubt very seriously there's an insurance company in the world that would underwrite a policy for a professional athlete in a contact or quasi-contact sport who only has one kidney.

It absolutely is within the realm of possibilities which is why I keep them on. The timing on these stories is just really weird sometimes. I had a story come up that dealt with a minor off field incident and how it may impact the players performance over the next week... but it was in the offseason so it didn't matter.

I am not a doctor so I can't speak to whether or not it is possible to play after kidney surgery. My dad had his kidney removed when he was in elementary school and played sports all the way through high school... so there is that.

One time in the middle of a playoff race a manager of one of the playoff teams straight up retired in the middle of the series for no reason. It was funny but I just quit the game without saving and started it up again. He's still managing years later. I like to have some resemblance of realism.

I've said before OOTP should do what IIRC FM does if they don't want player deaths. Have their profile age frozen at the year they leave the sport (as a player AND staff) for good.
