Greetings to all from snow-buried Northern Michigan!
Yeah, it's that time of the year again. The Yoopers and the Nawtherners got buried. Otsego County was closed to road travel—that's 12 miles from my place. Antrim County was letting the federal highway there drift shut overnight because they couldn't manage the 5-6 foot drifts. The Mackinac Bridge was closed due to a)high winds and b)falling ice sheets. We love being news up here...but damn it, nature...that was NOT your cue. Why can't we make news the way we used to? You know...ritual murder at a pig farm...ski resorts gettin vandalized...OK, nature—let's talk.
Forty mph winds...6 foot snow drifts...(cue Bill Murray)..."human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together – mass hysteria." Wouldn't have been so darn bad, but the power was flickering so often we had to shut off the electronic...and I couldn't play OOTP! Somewhere, in the deepest darkest corners of my heart, I'm certain that qualifies as a human rights violation. All I can tell you is that the power is on and stable again, the gas is on, I've got a war chest of food in the house...and every day I live up here in God's Country (the northland, not nationalism) I'm grateful for the clean air, fresh water, challenging weather, and good people. Hoping that all of you wake up to something approximating that this morning as well. There's a lot of fine folk on this forum. It's good to wake up to. 'scute me, now. Coffee is done brewing and I've a drive to shovel...

Yes, but not today. The drive would be dicey at best. While I love whitefish, I'm partial to steelies, and my wife salmon, because we've waylaid them so heavily over the years at the Betsie & AuSable. Only since my neuropathy started kicking its heels have we had to join the masses and...gasp...pay actual money...for fish. Looking forward to that changing this spring, if it ever arrives.
Tony's...the best!

heh, is that the one great lake we can eat out of without checking mercury levels?
near the mining areas wouldn't be wise in the UP to eat the fish. they stopped putting the warnings on the news. not sure if that means it's better or they still have ongoing mercury problems... my money is on the latter based on all of human history and then some.closer to detroit i can still see grass in most of my yard, but it is quite cold. still gusty, but not as bad as last night. |
