Negro league players

How do you get these players into the database?

I assume you mean to ask how to get these players into your game

Create a new historical game, and right under where you select your starting season, check the box to Import real Negro Leagues (1920-1950) and minor leagues (1915+).

I selected that box for a save in 1959 and those players still were not in the game when I searched for them.

That's most likely because they'd have all retired by then.

by 1959, there were no longer any truly functioning Negro Leagues around. In OOTP, the Negro Leagues end with Jackie Robinson entry.

To get them in the game in the 1950's era, you'd have to import them manually with the import player function... (be aware their numbers are skewed to be lower, as the game recognizes them only as AAA level - unless something's changed in the past year.)

all Negro League players are in the database (in the game the actual Negro League teams exist from 1919-1947). They can be imported manually into any era (directions are in the on-line manual) if you want to go through that route. (some - such as Cool Papa Bell and Rube Foster have had a history in earlier version of the game not importing with the player ID in the game. Sometimes you need to search Seamheads, BB reference for example to find a different ID and try them. i haven't tried to import any Negro league players into version 22. When I want them in my game (playing mostly fictional these day) as i simply manually add them and edit their numbers to be competitive.) Just a heads up.

I guess I had a stupid moment. I just assumed that starting in 1959 they would be in the database as retired so I could just go back and edit them. Thanks for the clarification.

Check the minor league DB option on import just to be sure.

Here's a file with (mostly) functional import data for NeL guys.

But, as mitchkenn said, it is a fraught process with a lot of them nerfed beyond realistic usability.

So another question...someone like leon day his baseball reference id didn't transfer him into the game so I went to seamheads and got a different one using day--01leo. What does the dashes in the center do because that id also does not work. I'm beginning to think that i just need to start a season every year and get the csv list on the rosters on the negro leagues file and just import them like that since the historical ids are not adding.

My pleasure. Not EVERY one of them works but I've tried to amend as needed. Any you have problems with just let me know on here and I'll try to get you sorted.

And please do be aware, these guys come NERFED and are hard to use with recalc on because a lot of their stats are treated as MiLB.

The only feasible way I've found to use them in a Historical Sim, while using recalc, is to manually edit them each year. I would love if ootp would implement something along the lines of a "Lock ratings" feature, where you could just tick a box and it would prevent a player from regressing/progressing, through a historical sim of course.



My hopes are that with the recent advent of the Negro League players being much more recognized, is that the NBL database gets a bit of an overhaul for OOTP 23. Only time will tell.

Two steps.

1. Update the OOTP database so it is as current as Seamheads.

2. Ignore the fact that only some NeL Seasons are recognized by MLB as "Major League" and just move all those NeL numbers up to be "MLB" stats. None of the National Association (1871-1875) records are regarded by MLB as "Major League" but OOTP elevated them to MLB status so we could better enjoy the game. Do. The. Same.

That's a start and just involves updating and then cutting and pasting in Excel/csv files currently in-game... Don't make the perfect the enemy of the good. I'll take the good at this point...

There is a workaround via cloning and manual editing, but it is mighty complicated and the game still tries to bend these players to its will. Check out my Bucs save via the signature below to see NeL players deployed in an unsegregated MLB setting from the off (well, 1909 to be precise). It has 5-yr recalc on. All of these players are cloned and manually curated by me to varying degrees. The Eclipse League is for want of a better description a Random Debut NeL / MLB hybrid in which no white players are involved. But in this save only dev is on, not recalc.

So these things can be done but it involves a heck of a lot of planning and tinkering. I, too, hope OOTP addresses this in a satisfactory way ASAP so this is unnecessary.
