Pre-release day rituals

While I have not decided yet if I will buy this year's version, one thing I always do as release day approaches is play OOTP5. I have the free version of OOTP5 on a flash drive along with several leagues I played back in the day.

One of my favorite leagues is a historical MLB starting in 1950. I play Cleveland, of course. It's a great joy handling a team with players like Bob Feller and Larry Doby and Early Wynn. I have pictures enabled, and in my mind's eye I can actually see Bob Feller winding up with that high leg kick.

I return to OOTP5 for a little while because it reminds me of a time when my life was much, much simpler. The first version of this game that I played was Season Ticket Baseball. I had a great job, made plenty of money, and it was before the devastating family illnesses that have made life a lot more somber since then.

I remember the day I purchased Season Ticket Baseball. I took my wife to some store or other, and while she was shopping I went to the software section to browse. I spotted Season Ticket Baseball, and the package description sounded almost too good to be true. But I bought it anyway. We went home, I installed the game, and was absolutely stunned when I saw all that I could do with it. I could create my own perfect baseball universe!

Playing OOTP5 in the weeks before release reminds me of that time, and gets me excited to see where the game will go in the years to come.

My ritual is trying to figure out how many perfect team packs I'm going to crush when the game launches.

I try to have my various season sims at a point where it makes sense to transfer to the new version - as in off-season if I can get there. This year will be special. In the run-up period, I will be hanging out with three friends who date back to Strat-o-Magic and APBA card games in 1967. I’ll be dragging my ipad and laptop to the reunion, eager to hook them on OOTP. They are naturals, as in true lifetime baseball fans and still competitive as heck. Two Pirates fans, one Orioles fan, one Cardinals fan. Each convinced he could do better as GM and field manager. I intend to fire up OOTP and let them mess around. I’ve preloaded the 1966 season on OOTP GO on the ipad. That’s the first season we played as teenagers. We can actually replicate the teams we drafted back in the day, only now see them play.

I gotta say that sounds pretty darn cool. I'm envious of those just discovering the game. Sometimes, I'm so deep in it, I forget that OMG feeling of playing it for the first time. Hope they enjoy it!

My first version was OOTP3, but 5 was the first version I completely got into and tried mods and making mods for. that was a great version.
