What effect does popularity have?

Does it only matter for All-Star votes? I've noticed that it's off for a few players, but I'm not going to bother fixing it if it doesn't do anything.

Signing and releasing popular players has an effect on fan interest, I believe.

Popularity affects fan interest, which affects attendance so you can actually increase ticket prices for some more revenue with higher fan interest.
