Had to be online to play my esellerate v21, why?

My new computer was sent in for warranty work so, I have been playing OOTP on my old computer that I don't want to have online for security reasons. As the title states it is the esellerate version bought direct from OOTP Dev. This is the computer I installed v21 on when I bought it last year and v21 has never been unlicensed. FWIW it is also licensed on my new machine as I could not get into windows to unlicense before sending it in. But that only means I have used the 2 licenses that are allowed.

All is going well until tonight. Start the game and I get the "register or buy v21 method". I go online with the old computer and now the game loads up straight away. Why? I always thought once the game was registered that it would be playable at all times offline. Is that wrong?

It's the only way to play while waiting on my new computer to come back. But it is in a repair center in Texas so not holding my breath on a quick turnaround.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Well it's whatever they call the version we get when we purchase direct from OOTP Dev.

In any case computer was offline and running game just fine for a week. Tried to play tonight and got the purchase\enter code options only. Connected computer to internet and the game started up on the first try. I can
now play again offline.

Was under impression once code was put it being online was no longer needed at any time to start the game.

Looking for clarification from OOTP on how this works. I don't think the stand alone game should be requiring internet check in to play. If not the case would be nice to know. If connection is required then how often would that be?
