Rehab Assignments?

How necessary are minor league rehab assignments for players who were just recovered from injury? Is there any benefit to sending them for a rehab assignment? Is there a negative for putting them right back in the major league lineup?

If players have been out for a long time (more than a few weeks. The exact time is unknown) they are more likely to be injured after returning and more likely to be rusty.

The rehab assignment helps them to "shake off the rust" and, i guess, avoid injury.

I can't find anything in the manual about the effect. Could be something for flavor, like mound visits.
