How big are your shortlists?

If you have a draft of 30-35 draftees, how many of them do you shortlist? what criteria do you use to add someone to your shortlist?

I spend most of my time in an online fictional league. I have a shortlist of in-house prospects, intriguing free agents, and one more for random players that I want to follow. I’d say there’s no more than 20 guys on any list.

I don't really use them anymore. Go through my minors on the Rosters/Transactions tab. But when I did I usually would only shortlist guys with 3.5 Potential and above. Or if I knew I wasn't signing a guy in the next year or two, and had a few potential in house replacements

got it

so how do you handle promotions & demotions? thats the only real reason I want to shortlist anybody to move them up at my own speed rather than AI's.

do you do it all manually, or let the AI handle everything

I'll let my Assistant GM handle it initially. Then I'll switch it to my responsibility during the season and move guys up or down that are performing well, or are struggling

I actually still use the short lists but for different things. I have "Players I Traded Away", "Players Lost On Waivers", etc. I like to be able to keep up with who I've let go and see who pans out that I lost out on because I didnt see their potential or some other reason.

The players i think are my best prospects, I lock to their minor league rosters. Then I let the AI control everybody else, so, if they are at the wrong level, it doesn't matter too much. Then I move the locked players up when I'm ready.

Yeah, this

And I use short lists when I'm trying to decide between a few players I want to acquire. Say 3 or 4 different starting pitchers. Then I can easily compare all of them to each other. Then when I decide on one, I delete the shortlist.

I shortlist my prospects until they reach the bigs or leave my organization

I think Shortlists are a great feature. Unfortunately, I don't take advantage of them as I should. I have one remaining active shortlist that I named "My Prospects" and it's as simple as the title sounds. After every draft, I add my first few picks to that list and then anyone else who looks like they're going to be someone I consider worth watching after a season of GCL and/or NYPL. The main reason I do it is that OOTP then changes those player's names to all capital letters which makes them easier to identify at a quick glance...especially if I trade any of them. It's good to see who I was right or wrong about.

I utilize shortlists quite a bit. I have one for my top prospects, one for my "sleeper" prospects, one for players I might be interested in acquiring, and one for some players that I have let go or traded away. I also have a shortlist for players I am scouting heavily in the upcoming amateur drafts. And finally, I have a shortlist where I place all of the players I drafted in the most recent draft. I keep them there for about a year and track their progress. After that, I move them to the top prospect shortlist, the "sleeper" shortlist, or just take them off the lists entirely.

I use shortlists quite a bit myself. I have been asking OOTP for years to implement a color coded option with them.

That must mean you have College & High School feeder leagues, right?

That would be really cool. I wouldn't want to have too many shortlists without the ability to differentiate which list players might belong to. As I said, I am only using one shortlist currently and that's because I like seeing those names in all capital letters for easy identification.

Zero. I don't use them at all.

how do you define "best prospects"... any qualifications for what gets a player put on your best prospect list or is it more subjective and case by case

I did the same thing back when I played non-PT a lot more. I had a shortlist for each type of transaction.

I liked periodically looking at the "Released" shortlist and seeing how those players dispersed through the game's universe.

This is what I do, so perhaps a better question would be "How many are your shortlists?" This is what I currently have:

I have about 20 something shortlists. Lol. I use the feature liberally to say the least.
