When you are hot....well....part of the beauty of the game, as well as the heartbreak. The Brownies will not be in the post-season but as Joe Jackson (Baseball Magazine) was heard to say in the press box after the final run scored, 'might be the knockout punch' here this afternoon.

N.L. Standings

The Phillies are hot on the heels of the surprising Giants having won 4 of 5 from NY. Looks like a barn burner down the stretch in the Senior Circuit.

Doyle having a career year for the Giants the clear spark plug of the team often batting 3rd in the line-up. NYG are first in batting average and 2nd in Runs Scored.

Sept 8 Game One

The Tigers have DH's back to back with St. Louis and hope to make it 3/4 in the afternoon game. This one went to Detroit as Covey yielded 10 hits but 0 walks which was good enough for the Detroit 4-1 victory.

Just one batter to go

Only Burt Shotten stands between Dauss and the no hitter.

Sept. 10 - Tigers at White Sox

A short two game set at Comiskey Park did not disappoint the home town crowd. The game ended with runners at the corners.

The White Sox keep rolling along in September proving to the rest of the American League that 'any bet against those Sox is a 'sucker bet'. Fenway Park has been the site of another streaking Sox ball club as the Red Sox have reeled off 10 in a row and now are only 1.5 GB Detroit in what has now become a race for 2nd place.

Meanwhile, the Giants are doing an amazing job of fending off the Phillies as they were not expected to be in the upper division of the National League. Expectations going in were a 69-83 8th place finish proving the old adage 'that's why they play em' attributed to almost everyone, i.e. anonymous HS coach, Adolph Rupp, et al.

The Expanded Standings

A few teams, including the Detroit Tigers, might wonder 'what if' when they look at this graphic.

The Tigers take on Cleveland on the road and weak starting pitching by Covey and a host of Detroit errors allow the Indians to win a close one, 9-7. The Tigers had 10 LOB but the stat that really haunts them is Donnie Bush has amassed an unseemly 48 errors as an infielder. At the same time it could be worse, as below Bush's fielding report is Ollie Omara's of the Brooklyn Robins.

The Detroiters took out their frustration of the last week of play on the Indians today at Somers Park and at the same time making a 21 game winner out of Hooks Dauss.

The Sox were off today so Detroit trimmed a half game off the deficit and are now 8.5 GB. The Tigers continue eastward as they will take on the Yanks 4 games spread out over 5 days. Then the Red Sox.

Jean DuBoc wins his 19th of the year as the Tigers handle the Yanks 5-2 courtesy of an explosive 7th inning where they tallied 5 of their 6 hits and all of their runs.
Meanwhile, the pale hose were struggling with the red hot Red Sox (12 of 13 in September) who they play 4 more times this week. If not the Tigers, maybe Boston can perform a miracle finish. Not to rule the Tigers out they are now trailing by 9 in the loss column and 7.5 GB.

Sept 15 Standings

The White Sox would really have to collapse in order to lose the American League pennant but in the Senior Circuit the Giants, Phillies, and now the Boston Braves are contending.

Meanwhile, the Georgia Peach looks poised to win another batting title at the age of twenty eight. His WAR of 9.0 is pretty impressive. Speaker of Boston is second with an 8.5 WAR.

Shawkey and the Yankees have their way with the Tigers as they cruise to an easy win in NY.
